For most houses, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where food is prepared with love for family and friends, where wine is poured for late night conversations, where many homework sessions occur, and where memories are created for years to come. Because of this, kitchens should be a beautiful place in the home where people feel comfortable and at peace while still remaining highly functional for its many uses. Kitchen renovations can cost a lot of money, time, and effort so it’s important to choose styles that will age well over the years and fit your family in all stages of life. We’ve created a list of some of the current kitchen trends that will be sure to pass the test of time.

Contrasting Materials

Color in the Right Places

Mixing Metals

Accent Sinks

Open Shelving

Durable Yet Gorgeous Countertop Materials
Marble countertops have been all the rage the past few years as they are dramatic and bright with sharp clean lines. However, marble is very vulnerable to stains so it’s simply not the best material for someone who uses their kitchen often and wants a long-lasting material. Nano glass countertops are the new marble because they are heat resistant, nonporous, and are highly resistant to stains while still providing that pure white, modern look. Nano glass is harder than regular glass and come in various styled slabs.
Quartz countertops are a more expensive option than nano glass but offers the same easy to maintain and stain resistant material. Quartz also comes in a larger array of colors than granite and you can easily find a marble look alike slab.
Another great countertop option for those who are looking for a darker, dramatic look for their kitchen would be soapstone. Soapstone comes in a deep, rich color and can be used for both countertops as well as sinks. However, you must be aware that although soapstone is hard and stain resistant, it can scratch, dent, and wear over time. This is actually a part of the beauty of soapstone countertops and is perfect for homeowners who enjoy a historic or antique look.

You don’t have to limit yourself to one countertop material and one color throughout your kitchen design in order to have a sleek and cohesive look. Try mixing materials such as dark-oak cabinets and white countertop slabs or visa-versa. Consider adding a slab backsplash as well to add even more contrast. Speak to an interior designer to get some opinions on which contrasting materials work best together and get creative in order to have a sophisticated and warm feel in the heart of your home.

Speaking of backsplashes, this is a great way to add color and design for families who aren’t going for an all-white kitchen. Use colorful tiles as your backsplash for a fun and bright feel or consider a graphic wallpaper on one wall for an endearing or dramatic touch. If wallpaper feels too permanent, peel-and-stick papers are easy to install and remove and offer a wide range of designs.

Just like contrasting countertops can add sophistication, mixing metals is a great way to elevate your kitchen and give it a more layered look. Although, it’s important to make conscious decisions when mixing metals so your kitchen doesn’t appear disoriented or designed without thought. To help with these decisions, try choosing one main finish and then adding one or two accent finishes. If you have mainly stainless-steel appliances, then consider use chrome for your knobs, pulls, and fixtures. Matte black and polished nickel would be a great option for darker kitchens, especially with a white and grey mixed quartz countertop.

Spending most of your effort and budget into the sink area can be a huge way to really make your kitchen stand out. Consider installing a soapstone material sink on top of wooden cabinetry for a rugged, vintage look. Textured stone sinks are also great for French country inspired kitchens. Not to mention, large basins are extremely functional and perfect for homeowners who spend most of their time in the kitchen. If stone isn’t your style, look into getting a hammered copper apron-front sink for the perfect standout sink.

With all the incredible kitchenware sold these days, why not opt to showcase your dishes with an open shelving design. It’s also perfect for the hand-me-down dishes from grandma or the beautiful plate you bought in Italy. Installing shelves in your kitchen allows you to decorate the space with dishes you already have and gives you the option to display art or plants throughout as well. Tuck away your uglier dishes or big mixers in cabinets below and let your nicest items shine.
